American Badger Hunting Gopher

Recently I was able to observe a American Badger (Taxidea Taxus) during a rare day time foraging expedition. The video posted here taken while it was hunting a Pocket Gopher shows the method to its success. Using its superb auditory sense it listens to the gophers movements underground. Shortening the escape route each end by back filling its digs all while the odds tighten for the rodent. Once the gopher is in centered sights it is all over and the badger makes short work of its meal. It appears as if the badger will remove the skin and head first in a similar way that rabbits are skinned for consumption. Well it did in this case. My guess and it’s just a guess that this makes it easier to pass the indigestible fur and skull through its system. But hey I guess some scientist somewhere knows the facts. I will be posting a full story here @ www.badgerwild.com soon. You will want to stay tuned to see what this badger found for dessert a little later on during the incredible journey into this badgers world.

Badgers, everything I know about them.

I’m pretty sure anyone my age or older remembers the TV show “Wild Kingdom” hosted by Marlin Perkins. It was staple diet watching for us back in Australia. Let’s fast forward to early 2016 when I was trying to research badgers and found that there really was not much information available. No one seemed to want to talk about them and they were “too hard to find.” The only guy that gave me any good information was a farmer who had some interactions that occurred mainly at night. Hard text from any researchers was not online and I could not find any dedicated books. I did find some amazing photos online by a photographer with a circle of life series showing American Badgers successfully hunting Prairie Dogs but not much else. Well along comes YouTube and this episode of Wild Kingdom “The Summer of the Badger”. Of course a lot of this is setup to tell a story but it was great to finally get some insights into this mysterious animal that was creating all these holes over Point Reyes National Park. So I hope you enjoy this video like I did. It also features otters, coyotes, raptors and other crittas of the prairie.

Canon EOS M5 Mirrorless Camera

Just a quick repost of something I shared on FB.

I have been using the new Canon EOS M5 mirrorless camera for a while and think I’m finally starting to work it out. This morning I went to the Corte Madera wetlands for a little while before breakfast and tried some things out. Its a fun small camera with more brains than some of the bigger DSLR’s and I think it performs well.
